This is a photo of a really cool stump I found while walking during the group escapade on 05 September 2024! I love the swirl of the branch in the top right corner.
Hello Friends!
The campus woods are a place of mystery to me. They exist like a boundary to a video game, and I only really knew you could go into them when my friend Arden said she had a summer painting class in the woods. They are very expansive compared to the rest of Wright State. I want to say you could fit the entirety of the Lake and Main campus buildings inside the woods and there would still be room for more growth.
Now, even though I said I didn’t know you could traverse in the woods before summer. I still went into them with Teddy, my dog, over the spring and late last fall. I visited the cemetery and the Boonshoft Memorial. The road leading up to the cemetery is the place where I want to take my senior photos next fall. I also assumed the woods were just the part with the cemetery in it. I didn’t know the woods behind the Woods Residential halls were also apart of the Campus Woods. Thinking back to 2021 and 2022, I would always wake up in the early mornings to look at the tree line as I’d walk to the chapel. About half of the time, I would see a few deer run back into the woods, but once, I saw a fawn in the grass between the chapel and Springwood Ln. that was just curled up so small. I wish I had snapped a photo of the little thing.
The woods themselves, I feel as if I still know nothing about even though we just ventured into them. I had kept my head down the whole time, and I was huffing and puffing away. It felt as if there was very little time to stop and “smell the roses” as one would put it. Well, we would have been smelling Paw Paw’s. It’s almost time for their fruits to fall, and I saw at least one tree bearing fruit when we went into the woods. Paw Paws are on my bucket list of fruits to try. I’ve been told they can range from a mango-y banana goodness to a less than pleasant bitter after taste. One of the things I’m excited to learn more about is what is growing in our woods and how we can use it.
Overall, I’m super excited for this semester, and I can’t wait to see how it goes for everyone. May we each find something beautiful to take out of this class and use it to better ourselves and the rest of our environment.
Until the next adventure!
W. Tracy
